THE VOICE OF A MELANCHOLY SIREN

Norah jones brought jazz to pop, Britney refreshed it with chewing gum and perfect choreographies, Lavigne introduced happy punk and reused the guitar with a great sensibility as her mother Alanis made it once; Gaga created a concept with a lifestyle never seen before, Whinehouse reminded us that soul always will move our hearts and Adele confirmed it, declare it and made it immortal.

When I listened and saw Lana del Rey for the first time I had the feeling that a new siren would sing and that she would change things, and, in a certain way, she did it.

Everybody knows that Euro-electro-pop is a secure and multimillionaire trend, but there are still some girls that do what they want, and Lana del Rey has shown that it’s not necessary being sexually active in front of public, using more and more dresses that only Gaga can wear or having “fun and open” lyrics to succed.

Del Rey is an internet phenomenon, and for being her succes so quick, many have doubt about her credibility and see her like any other product of sale just disguised with another skin.

As far as I’m concerned, her clumsy and reserved attitude hypnotized me from the beginning, her gangster look, her deep voice, treble choirs and her lyrics fantastically decadent, which are a perfect reflection of our actual youth: pessimist and negative.

And it came the day to listen “Born to Die” completely, the bet was high and she risked everything on one stake, finally, I end up confused.

Without any doubt, it sounds totally different from what is heard nowadays and goes against the flow of trend on radio. Lyrically, Lana doesn’t leave any loose end, she states very well her pessimism, her extraordinary self-destructive relationships and her resentment because of the lack of love and romanticism in her life. The sound is balanced, is a mix of indie (Bat for Lashes), soul (Duffy) and alternative (Björk), but perfectly edited to be accepted by any ear and not being rejected from the first time.

There are excellent songs: “Born to die”, “Off the raices”, “Dark Paradise”, “Lolita”, “Lucky Ones” and the exceptionally melancholic and depressively romantic, “Video Games”. Nevertheless, I think that the great problem of this record is the lack of edition, it’s here where I realize that adding two or three songs which are not necessary may spoil a record, and that’s what doesn’t make it round, besides the feeling of lack of control and stability from Del Rey.

This album needed to grow up, we can notice that Lana is not yet prepared professionally to fight in the world of music. The seed is there, so it’s the talent, but there is no experience enough, those guts to create a complete concept. “Born to die” was the prefect door to shout out “the indie world rocks!” Gaga and Adele say it: there are no rules! And Lana was the girl who could have said it in a more sophisticated way.

Born to die is like the garment that you see in the store window and looks spectacular but once you wear it you realize is not as perfect as you might thought, but time and blows will give her that maturity that needs, and when that day comes… Oh, she will be great!
